The Academy of Cuban History in Exile recently published "Agustín Acosta and Oscar Fernández de la Vega - Two exemplary Cubans: Poetry, Teaching and Duty," by Dr. Jesse Fernández, distinguished teaching professor emeritus of SUNY Old Westbury. The volume brings together a study of the historical development of the prominent 20th century Cuban intellectuals mentioned in the title of the book. Acosta is considered one of the major poets in Cuban history, and was also a political leader in the 1930’s whose opposition to the totalitarian regime at that time landed him in prison and almost cost him his life. Fernández de la Vega, a close friend and admirer of Acosta, was a distinguished educator and scholar whose opposition to the Castro regime forced him to leave Cuba in 1960, at the peak of his career. The Academy of Cuban History in Exile is a not-for-profit organization in the United States that develops and documents records of historical facts related to Cuba and those exiled from the now-Communist nation.
